Overview

The demands of leadership are changing.  The new model of leadership is defined in the context of a rapid pace of change and the fast growth of the Internet workspace. Every team is running hot.   Competition is never far behind.  And Wall Street expectations are high.

Leaders in ecommerce must execute quickly against opportunities in a fluid and dynamic environment.  Business models and strategy are not static, and can change every few months, and some startups are adding a person a day to their staff which requires a new framework for leading and developing teams, taking risks, staying flexible, and acting entrepreneurial.

The Leadership & eCommerce site of the Wharton School's Center for Leadership explores developments, benchmark practices, and future trends in Internet-based practices of leadership.  Case studies and interviews with high-tech startups and entrepreneurial divisions within established firms provide viewers of this site with best-practice models and practical techniques.  Current leaders in the new economy offer their ideas to help managers in the Internet environment establish an agenda for discussion within their company.  Video clips give firsthand insight into how leaders respond to the demanding challenges and changing environment of the workplace.

Andy Grove, Chairman of Intel, put it best: "In a few years' time, there will be no Internet companies -- there will just be companies -- and all companies that are going to operate in the economics of a few years, in the future, are going to be Internet companies." (Andy Grove, 09/20/99, http://www.andygrove.com/pressroom/archive/speeches/)

The leadership and eCommerce domain has been developed by John Joseph (Wharton MBA, 2001), Kelly Jo Larson (Wharton MBA, 2001), and Michael Useem with support from McKinsey & Co.
